What: Santiago caldera, Masaya Volcano National Park, about 20 kilometers south of Managua, Nicaragua

When: March 2014

Distance from Fargo: Over 3,300 miles

Comments: On entering, each person is given a hard hat. We were told to limit our visit to the rim to 35 minutes so that the sulfur dioxide would not damage our lungs. Three weeks after we returned, Nicaragua was rocked by a series of earthquakes that attest to the seismic instability that produced the volcanoes.
